National Awareness Weeks

Posted on:

Our Patient Participation Group (PPG) is helping to share and promote national health awareness weeks to keep our community informed and engaged.

These awareness campaigns cover a wide range of important health topics — from mental health and diabetes to carers and and healthy lifestyles.

Together, we aim to stay informed and involved!

Cervical Screening Awareness Week- 17th-23rd June

Regular cervical screening is important for anyone with a cervix. This includes women, trans men and people assigned female at birth.

Two women per day die in the UK from cervical cancer – it is the most common form of cancer in women under the age of 35.

Regular cervical screening can prevent up to 75% of instances of cervical cancer. Despite this, many women are reluctant to have the test done, with nearly 1 in 3 not responding to their cervical screening invitation.

Learning Disability Week- 16th-22nd June

The theme this year is “Do you see me?” which is all about people with a learning disability being seen, heard, included, and valued in all aspects of life.

Men’s Health Week – June 9th-15th

An international event aimed at raising awareness about men’s physical and mental health. The week is led by the Men’s Health Forum and encourages men and boys to prioritise their health and seek professional help when needed. https://www.menshealthforum.org.uk/mhw

Loneliness Week – June 9th-15th

Loneliness Awareness Week is a campaign dedicated to raising awareness of loneliness, a feeling most of us will experience- but stigma keeps us silent. It’s all about creating supportive communities by having open, honest conversations. Loneliness is a natural human emotion – we are hardwired to need social connections. By talking about it, we can support ourselves and others.

Carers Week – June 9th-15th

Focuses on the theme “Caring About Equality,” highlighting the challenges and inequalities faced by unpaid carers. The campaign aims to raise awareness and advocate for greater support and recognition for carers.

Volunteers’ Week – June 2nd–8th

First established in 1984 by Volunteering England,
Volunteers Week is now coordinated by NCVO (the National Council for Voluntary Organisations). During the week stories about volunteering are shared on social media and hundreds of celebrations and events take place. As well as helping others, Volunteering has been shown to have a positive impact on the lives of those who volunteer,
assisting volunteers in gaining new skills and boosting
self-esteem. There are many voluntary organisations in the UK that rely on volunteers to help others including Fernville’s PPG!
