OPALS – Older Persons Activity Learning and Safety

The aim of an Older Persons Activity Learning and Safety (OPALS) event is to provide quality information, advice and help available within the local community on a wide range of services available to reduce vulnerability of our senior citizens, to provide reassurance, safe and wellbeing support and reduce loneliness. It’s a sociable event and a great opportunity to meet other residents in the local area.

All attendees will be seated and served refreshments and a FREE hot meal, representatives from a variety of agencies will give a short talk, (15 minutes), providing advice and the services they offer. Following the talks there will be time to interact with the different agencies and service providers, before lunch is served.

The speakers will be as follows: Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Services, Hertfordshire Constabulary Neighbourhood Team, Trading Standards, Hertfordshire Independent Living (HILS) Red Cross, AGE UK and Herts Sports Partnership, Live Longer Better plus ad hoc inputs from, NHS, Citizens Advice,  and the Alzheimer Society.

In addition to the speakers there will be an array of stalls, which offer further advice, where they can collect some safety related information and freebies, these include but not limited to

Herts Help, NHS Trust, Herts Health Walks, Local Council, HSP-Live Longer Better, Communities 1st  Citizens Advice, Trading Standards, Cyber Fraud, Beacon Victim support, Public Health, Crime Prevention, Alzheimer Society, Red Cross, HILS, Herts Ability, Homes Instead and AGE UK.

OPALS is intended to reach a specific demographic of people. Ideally the target audience should comprise of people aged over 60 years old or possibly live alone and are socially isolated.
