Access to medical records

GP practices have been instructed to grant patients access to their medical records through the NHS app and website if they possess a suitable NHS login. These records include consultation notes, prescribed medications, test results, allergies, vaccines, and medical conditions.

Documents from external organisations such as local hospitals and clinics may also be included. While the practice supports providing access, we need to emphasise the need for safe implementation and offer the option to opt out.

Patients are encouraged to discuss concerns, understand the content of their records, and evaluate potential risks with the practice before deciding. Access levels vary, from basic information like medication history to a comprehensive view of consultation notes.

Patients should also be aware of the potential emotional impact of viewing certain documents and are reminded that access can be limited or customised based on individual preferences or circumstances.

Consideration is also given to situations where privacy concerns or abusive relationships may arise, with the practice offering safeguards to ensure patient safety.
